Captain Gentry was born in 1874 in England and died in 1938 in St James. Known as the ‘doyen of hotel proprietors’, he came to South Africa in 1908 and bought the Seahurst Hotel in St James from Jessie Miller.

In 1915 he joined the St James Hotel, which he took ownership of in 1925 for £20 000, and sold the Seahurst. His friendly ways and extrovert mannerisms made him a favourite with the locals and the overseas visitors.
